File Name Length Limited to 75 Characters

My C drive will not accept files names that are over 75 characters long. My
D drive will allow up to 128. When I attempt to copy a file from my D drive
to my C drive and the file has 76 or more characters, the name is either
changed to a name such as ELL~1, or I receive an error message that tells me
that the file name is too long. I cannot find a setting to change the length
of file names. I understand that I am limited to 128 characters, but I am
allowed no more than 75.

The file ELL~1 which does not show the extension, has been truncated
(shortened) to an 8.3 name. Either your C drive is formatted FAT32 or you
have an NTFS format with 8.3 Name Creation enabled.

Windows allows 255 characters including the path.

Move the file to a different location with a shorter path, or rename the
file with a shorter name.

In denisedenise <[email protected]> hunted and pecked:

Thank you. I do have FAT32 but I didn't know that the path name was also
taken into consideration and that no more than 255 characters was the max. I
have a very involved systematic filing system which takes up many characters,
but I'd never run into this problem before, probably because my newest file
names are also longer due to the need to incorporate additional information.
When I shortened the path, the file name fit.

P.S. I don't hunt and peck :) 68+ wpm

Oh, I find it funny, but my son, who hunts and pecks can type almost as fast
as I can. . . applies and oranges are both delicious. Thanks again for your
help and I hope you have a good weekend.
