Focus issues in Epson Scan

When scanning non-standard 35mm size slides I get fuzzy images. I am
trying to scan my family's "instamatic" slides. The images are fuzzy
when scanned in thumbnail and "normal" mode. I scanned "super slides"
(127 size film) acceptably using "normal" mode but it does not seem to
work for the smaller (1 inch square) film. Any suggestions? I have a
thousand of these yet to scan.
