Boot your machine with a Win98 boot disk from
www.bootdisk.com, then report back here with
the result. By the way, your post would be a lot
more readable if you used some punctuation.

.you have to copy the file to a floppy disk, but my
floppy disk is not working, so cant copy the boot disk

You need to ask a friend to do this for you. Once
you have the Win98 boot disk, label it and keep
it - everyone should have one!

You'll find that a thumb drive is more convenient for
college. I do hope you're planning on taking English 101.
You can also use a USB card reader and Compact Flash cards,
they are very handy and cheap these days.

After the joke, I'll suggest how to fix your floppy drive.
The joke---Viagra.
Have you tried opening the device manager to see if any
errors are shown for the A: drive (floppy) and using the
troubleshooter that is on the properties page for the drive?
(Right click to select the drive, then select properties.)

Are all the cables properly connected, firmly in their
sockets? Often something is moved and not reconnected when
installing new hardware such as a CD-RW. Both the 34 wire
ribbon cable and the power connection are required to run
the floppy.

i'm doing an english higher right now but whats the point
of full stops and commas on this eh

It makes it easier to understand what you mean. If you want
to use chat/SMS text shortcuts, this isn't the forum.
BTW, have you opened the case and checked the connections
yet?

yeah the connection seems to be ok, but the green light
on the drive is always on, and the conection is the right
way round

J

Jim Macklin

If the light is always ON you have the ribbon cable
reversed. Just unhook one end and turn it around.

i have tried them every way and still the light stays on,
there is no other way i could put them, could the ribbon
cable be damaged, or the drive, its really doing my head
in now, i have a powerpoint presentation on wed and need
this to be fixed, please i'll do anything

J

Jim Macklin

Yes, the cable could be damaged. The floppy cable is often
not keyed to go in one way only. Having the drive access
light stay on is often caused by the cable being reversed at
one end. See if it can be turned over at the drive or the
mobo connection so the side that is on the right goers back
in the left. Or it may have a red line on the cable, that
should be nearest the #1 pin on the drive (closest the
power pins) and the connector on the mobo.

yes the red line is next to the power pins, and the
connector on the mobo, i have tried it all the ways it
can be connected but the light is always on even when the
connection cables are not connected, only the power cable

J

Jim Macklin

Then it is either a damaged cable or a damaged drive or the
mobo is damaged. I'd start by substituting the cheapest
parts first. Or just remove the whole thing and use CD-R
and USB thumb drives and card readers, rather than replacing
the mobo jus to get a floppy.
