Floppy disk chatter

My A drive, floppy, chatters for approx. 30 seconds on shutdown and the end
program box comes up. I saw in another reply that the anti virus may be
scanning it at shutdown but I can't find where to shut it off. Norton system
works 2005. Windows XP. HP a220n. 2.08 ghz. 512MB ram. Any solutions. Thanks

It will be an option within your antivirus program itself, rather than a
Windows setting.

Open up your antivirus program and browse through the options on the menus
(eg have a look at the Tools > Options menu, if it exists) for such a
setting.

I sort of misspoke about the error, the chatter only occurs after I run a
floppy. When I insert a disk into the floppy drive and open a file then close
the file and eject the disk, upon shutting down the computer, the really loud
chatter occurs and the error message comes up "ending program."

try clearing your "most recently used documents" under taskbar& settings ...

did the problem go away ?

you may have accessed a program from the floppy which windows thinks is
still there

Sounds like the host application for the files on the floppy, or a program
from the floppy, is still running in the background when you "close the
file". Depends on the particular software you are using (eg could be buggy).
More information on the particular software package you are using might help
in someone being able to provide you with more advice.

Still chatters at shutdown after opening a file in the floppy drive. Tried
clearing recent docs., tried ctrl, alt, delete before shutting down, ran
Norton system doctor before shutdown, still comes up with ending program box
and chatters incessantly for 30 secs. Windows XP home, Norton system works
2005. You wrote, maybe more info on particular software, is this whats
needed? Thanks for all the input.

No I was wondering more about the type of file you are opening up from the
floppy ie are they Microsoft Word files, standalone executable files, or
connected with another package you have on the computer? Or does the problem
occur with all files regardless of type?

When it says "ending program" does it mention the name of the program it is
trying to end?

They are just Microsoft word files, small ones that I have saved. Doesn't
matter which file just any one on a floppy. Does not give a name, just says
ending program while the floppy is chattering.

Not sure, but might be worth reposting in one of the Word newsgroups

eg

microsoft.public.word.applications.errors

Someone there may know
