Laptop random shutdown

I have a HP pavillion ze5000 laptop for past 3 years running xp sp2. For last
few days, I am noticing that the laptop shuts down randomly in the middle of
any task. I have run spybot and ad-aware to ensure there is no spyware etc.
I was trying to run Norton Anti-virus scan when I noticed this problem first
so I thought it might have something to do with virus checker. But then I
noticed it shutdown even when it was just sitting idle. So it does not seem
to be related to anti-virus checker although I was never able to finish the
virus scan.

I also ran it on A.C without battery thinking that battery may be the issue,
but it still shutdown after sometime on its own. I see no error message or
any sign saying it is about to shut. It just happened wiothout warning
randomly. Sometimes it happens after 1-2 hours, other times after5-6 hours.

Any suggestions??

WinXP SP2 was only released in Aug-04. <wink>

When all else fails, HijackThis v1.99.1
(http://aumha.net/downloads/hijackthis.zip) is the preferred tool to use to
identify and remove possible hijackware. It will help you to both identify
and remove any hijackware/spyware. **Post your log to

It is possible that you are having cooling problems.
On any three year old machine, it's possible one of the fans is either dirty
or going bad.

Thanks.
I suspect it as well. Called HP and they said it could be overheating.
Not sure if I can take it apart to clean and/or replace the fan

How are the cooling fans working? Are the air vents free of obstructions?
