get updates now>

A Service Pack will not install on a "bootleg version"
of Windows XP. Sorry!

Please see the following:

You receive a "The product key used to install Windows is invalid" error message:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;326904&Product=winxp

Run the Windows XP Product Key Validation Assistant:
http://www.microsoft.com/resources/howtotell/ww/windows/default.mspx

If you are getting the following error message when attempting to update:

"The product key used to install Windows is invalid"

You'll have to purchase a new "Full Version" of Windows XP Professional
and perform a "Repair Install" using the new Windows XP Pro CD and Product Key
that comes with it. (You cannot simply change the Product Key)

The last article I read said that SP2 will be able to be installed on
a bootleg copy. Try it and see.

If the article said all illegal keys, it was wrong.
Not all but most.
There are some stolen keys that a Service Pack will not install.
In any case the proper thing to do is for the OP to buy what he is
using and stop using stolen software.

Jupiter,
Of course you are correct, he should not use bootleg copies, but the
question was "Can you install SP2 on it" The answer is yes. But again
like you corrected, not on all of them.
