Flashing screen while editing Slides

R

Robert LeBlanc

We have encountered a weird problem with PowerPoint. When
our user looks at the slide sorter, it works fine. But
when he goes to edit a slide, the screen flashes between
20 and thirty times before he can work on the slide. When
he moves to a diffrent slide it does it all over again.
He was using Office XP on Windows XP and we tried to
upgrade to Office 2003, but the problem is still there.
We have not removed PowerPoint or Office yet. We are
looking to see if anyone has experienced this before and
find out what is causing it. PowerPoint has been on his
computer for over a year without this problem.

Thank you,

Have you installed:

Windows sps
PowerPoint sps
DirectX 9
And updated the video drivers

This "phenomenon" occurs when you have many .png images or semi-transparent
PPT objects layered on the slide. Each flash of the screen is your video
card re-rendering the slide for each layering/overlap. As Austin said,
updating your video drivers is key. Usually another processor intensive app
is running in the background. If you close all other apps, have the video
drivers updated (and have a good graphics card) you should a decrease, or
end, to the problem.

[CRITICAL UPDATE - If you are using Office 2003, you should install this
update as soon as possible. From PowerPoint, choose "Help -> Check for
Updates".]

Hello Robert,

We have seen this occur when there is some incompatibility in the display
driver which is exposed at the higher hardware acceleration settings for
the driver.

Try reducing the setting in the display control panel:

1) Open "Display" control panel
2) In "Settings" tab click on the "Advanced" button
3) In the "Troubleshoot" tab reduce the level of "Hardware acceleration"
and click "Apply"
4) Repeat step 4 until flashing stops, then click "OK"
