THe hour glass next to my cursor arrow continually flashes and yet I can use
the cursor to active applications.

Can someone tell me how to stop the hour glass icon next to the mouse arrow
from flashing?

That pointer displays when the computer is busy with other processes.
If it does this continually, you may have a problem; it could even be
malware. But, if all you want to do is not see that pointer, open
Control Panel, Mouse applet, Pointers tab, highlight the "Working in
background" pointer, click Browse, locate the Normal Select pointer, and
select it.

Something is continually running in the background. Since only you can
see your computer, you need to find out what it is by doing methodical
troubleshooting.

The First Question Of Troubleshooting: what changed between the time
things worked and the time they didn't?

The Second Question of Windows Troubleshooting: what is the
malware/virus status of the machine? If you think it is clean, what
programs (and versions) did you use to determine this?

Be sure the computer is clean:

If the machine is completely clean and the problem continues, do
clean-boot troubleshooting:

Clean-boot advanced troubleshooting in Windows XP -

Standard caveat: If the procedures look too complex - and there is no
shame in admitting this isn't your cup of tea - take the machine to a
professional computer repair shop (not your local version of BigStoreUSA).
