I have been trying to install XPE on a flash card for some
time now. I have tried using both FAT system with
bootprep and NTFS multiple times. Making sure to set the
partition as active, etc. Every time I try and boot from
the Flash card I get a blinking cursor in the upper left
hand corner of the screen and that is all. I installed a
DOS system on the flash drive and got the same results.
Does this mean that the flash card is bad? I can transfer
files to and from the cards with no problem. Any help
would be appreciated.

Thanks

Ryan

Hi Ryan,

Can you give us more info about your flash card.

Manufacturer, size, removable/fixed., model.
Connection type, IDE, USB, ...
Primary, secondary controller, CF converter, board type...
Settings in BIOS.

Exact procedure that you have used to format disk with FAT and NTFS.
The more info the better.

Without these your problem could be anything. Even incompatibility between
BIOS and specific flash disk.

Also you can use google to find some old infos and suggestions.

The card is a Sandisk 1 gig. I have used the utility from
sandisk to mark the card as non-removable. The card is
connected to CF slot on the CPU which is the secondary IDE
controller. The BIOS recognizes the card as a fixed
disk. The bios is on auto detect and LBA format.

I have followed the procedure in the book Windows XP
embedded advanced by Sean Liming, which seems to be very
similar to other procedures I have seen.

1. Run utility to mark card as non-removable.
2. Set active partition using FDISK (partition size 500MB)
3. Format CF with FAT
4. Run bootprep
5. copy image files

I have an image built with EWF components

EWF manage Console Application
EWF NTLDR
Enhanced Write Filter

For the NTFS system I formatted the card on the target
system with NTFS and then copied the image.
I have looked through google with and can't find anything
different than what I have tried. Let me know what you
think

Thanks

You don't need to concern with TD and setting you make to your image.
Because your system has not reached even the point when ntldr is loaded.
You can make multi os boot.ini that will wait for some time so you can see
if boot.ini is loaded. This will speed up your tests. (you won't have to
copy image files)

If partitioning disk from dos does not work. You can delete all partitions,
boot XP on target device (you might use first XPe CD) and then try to use
diskpart.exe to partition your disk.
After that use format for placing FAT or NTFS.
You won't need to use bootprep.

I don't know why you have problems, but you should not have them (it should
work).

I have recently spoken with the CPU manufacturer and there
is a known issue with booting from the flash drive. So I
am sending the card back and hopefully the problem will be
taken care of.

Thanks
