Fixing a user logon problem

The problem i'm seeing is that when i try to log on to
this system, the log on seems to take (the user wallpaper
flashes up on the screen) and then it immediately logs
off. no error messages. almost as if the startup script
had been changed to immediately log you off without a
prompt.-- i've tried booting in safe mode with the same
result. it happens even when i try to log on as
admin...and it imapcts all the accts on this computer...
i'm loath to reinstall the OS but i can't think of
anything else to look at or try and change.

Insert the XP install disk and select repair etc.
