Fixing a registry permissions issue?

Hi ,

Here is my system spec:
Abit AG8 mobo, with 2 gig ram
2 raptor 10krpm Sata drives in RAID 0 (Primary boot with XP Pro)
1 Maxtor 80 Gig (secondary boot with XP Pro)
X700 Graphics
SB Audigy

I use the sata raid to boot for the last 2 years without issue. I had put
off updating to SP2 for a while. I tried to update it several times since
September with no luck, but I didn't really try to "fix" it until last night.
I read the log files of the update and found a reg key that it could change
because its permissions were set wrong. So I changed it. Re-did the update,
and it failed again, but for a different key. I changed that one, and again
another failure. Here's where I messed up.... I didn't want to spend days
trying to update after each key change so I changed the permissions for
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT and then sent those permissions to all child keys. Now
when I boot it gets to the screen right before the user names appear and I
can do nothing but hit the reset on the tower.... I have a restore point for
5 hours before I did the change, is it possible to restore to that point
using the recovery console? Or can I edit the registry for that installation
from this OS ? Any help is appreciated...

Thx

Hi Mark,
thx for the reply. I tried to goto Safe mode with command prompt. No good.
When it starts I get to the same screen. It's the same screen as I get when i
normally boot. The screen is light blue in the center with dark blue bands on
the top and bottom, and it has the Windows Xp logo in the center. Then the PC
just hangs there.... If you have any more ideas I'd appreciate it.....

Thx

this may get you back into
the desktop by replacing
your registry with a default
one via recovery console

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307545/

once you get back in windows,
you may be able to do a system
restore to a more recent date or
if you are tech savvy, then you will
have the opportunity to re-modify
the registry that didn't work.

Mark,

here's the command that it is acking me to use...
secedit /configure /cfg %windir%\repair\secsetup.inf /db secsetup.sdb /verbose

Now, how do I change this command to work on the setup I am using.

I am currently using a dual bott config. I want to fix the other boot
drives properties, it is on F drive right now. I'm not sure how to format the
command to work on my system...

Part of the Recovery Console start up will query you for the OS you want to
run in. If you are not seeing that query, the registry is probably gone.

Thx for replying... I tried this and I was able to boot up, but I had no
restore points to use.... It seems the directories were there but the data
inside wasn't...... So I put the original files back in place and I am back
to where I started..... :(

You can try using Regedit and load the hive from the broken installation
and attempt to grant permissions to the Administrator account but I
think that may be a futile exercise. The registry editor will not
recognize other user accounts because it won't be able to reconcile the
SID's. At this point the only way to reapply security permissions is by
doing an In-Place upgrade (Repair Install).

No luck getting my system to boot up using my original users... However, I
will be able to get to the desktop of all the old users by taking ownership
of them. It is a pain in the arse but at least I can get the data I need.....
When I'm done with that, I will wipe clean the Raid array and do a fresh
install.... Thx to all those who tried to help.... It was much appreciated...
