fixed decimal places

I just installed Office 2003 and while using Excel I
cannot get the fixed decimal places option to work as it
did in the previous version of Excel (2002). I have it
set to 2 in the drop down bos in the Options tab in the
tools menu. When I enter a number in a cell and press the
decimal key on my keyboard the number still appears as if
I did not press the decimal key and places two digits to
the right of the decimal point.

Uncheck the option you checked for 2. This is causing it to do the 2 digits to
the right

I think you have two things muddled up.
The Option Fixed Decimal allows you to enter a number with pressing the
decimal key; Excel then puts decimal in right place. Good for those entering
lots of dollar&cents values
If you want a number to be displayed always with 2 decimal places regardless
of what is put in (ie your enter 12.976 and Excel displays 12.98) then you
need to use Format
Next you should read about the option to treat numbers such that the value
is the same as the display: you entered 12.976 in A1, it displays as 12.98
because of formatting but the "real" value is still 12.976 unless you use
the option.

Best wishes
