Fix Margins

Word 2000: I created a custom page 4.5" by 8.5" landscape with 0.5"
margins on the top and bottom and larger margins on the sides. My
printer is an HP LaserJet 5. Each time I try to print, I get the
following error message: "The margins of section 1 are set outside the
printable area of the page. Do you want to continue?" Online help is not
any help in finding a real fix to this problem. The page prints
correctly in that none of the edges are cut off. How do I determine
which margin is causing the problem, and why does this problem happen
with such large margins?

G'day mcp6453 <[email protected]>,

you determine it from the ppd of your printer driver, a non-trivial
task that may be better answered as "You can't"...

The problem happens with SMALL margins, not large ones. 1/2" leaders
are too small for some printers, I try and stay near an inch for the
top to keep more printers happy - especially the model you mention.

Hi Mcp6453,

Sometimes, Word+printer driver simply don't like custom page sizes. When
this kind of thing gives me problems, I'll select the next larger page
size, then set the margins so that the printable area corresponds to what
I need.

The message can also occur if something is intruding into the margins,
such as a graphic, or table text.
