First message in the outbox has no date/won't go out, second will

Suddenly I am finding that the first message that I write and try to send
doesn't go out. I noticed that it wasn't italicized and that it has not
date. If that stays in the outbox and I write 1 or more messages, they all
are OK, have dates, are italicized and go out when I "send". Does anyone
have any idea of what's happening?
 
does it send if you stop looking in the outbox?
