Firewire not working?

A

ale

Hi, I have the Asus P4R800-V deluxe mboard, and and a sony digital 8 camera
with dv out connected. (firewire-IEEE1394 cable).
Windows Xp pro cannot see the camera, it's like they're never connected. The
camera is on, (player mode), there are no special options
in the camera menu on digital file transfer, (just connect and play they
mention), IEEE1394 is enabledin the BIOS setup and Windows.
In control panel, 1394 connection, (which is on) when I click repair I get
"Cannot proceed, TCP/IP is not enabled for this connection.
May be I'm missing sth? I can only think of a faulty cable, it's brand new
however. Any ideas?

Thank you

You aren't using it as a network connection, so don't worry about TCP/IP.
In device manager, do you see the card working properly?
Does it show up in "safely eject hardware" in your system tray when you open
that?
Have you tried updating the driver with the latest one for XP, from the
mfr's website?

Hi Ale,
Sorry no fixes for firewire from MS. They will deny that a problem exists.
(MVP works fine for me)
For myself this is what worked:
Roll back to SP1 drivers. How? You have to find the pre-SP2 files for
firewire.
Search for these files:
Go to C:\WINDOWS\Driver Cache\i386 in the sp1 cab copy out the
following files to a new folder you can call "Firewirefix," (without quotes)
1394bus.sys
arp1394.sys
nic1394.sys
ohci1394.sys
enum1394.sys is in C:\windows\system32\drivers

Avoid having XP SP2 reinstall it's drivers by first:
renaming the XP2.cab file (e.g. to XP2old.cab)

Replace the SP2 versions of these files in the C:\WINDOWS\system32\dllcache
and C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers in safe mode.

Go to device manager for your ohci firewire card and update SP2 drivers to
the SP1 drivers by pointing to Firewirefix. Reboot.

Your mileage may vary, but this is the only way I could Fix Firewire.

Thanks to both ! It is definitiely a microsoft sp2 driver problem, as a
quick search to the net proved.
I followed your advice Treeman but since I couldn't find the enum1394 file,
I ended up here
http://www.videredesign.com/support_xp_sp2.htm. This file can be taken from
sp2, so when I installed
everything and reboot, whew, the Sony camera showed up immediately.
Thanks again.

You're welcome Ale,
As you can see by the following posts from MS, they are in denial of this
problem.
The hotfixes they suggested works sometimes, and sometimes not.
The work-around I suggested works sometimes, and sometimes not.
So there is definatly a problem for firewire in SP2. If & when this get's
fixed correctly and rolled into SP2 via Windows Update, is still unknown.
Until then, XP Pro SP1 for me.

Hi Lanwrench,
F.Y.I., most DV camera manufacturers don't post driver updates for their
products. Especially cameras that connect via ilink. (aka firewire)
No drivers needed, that is except from Microsoft.

Right - I meant drivers for the Firewire itself.

Fine & Dandy,
If this hotfix indeed works, please make sure it's included in Windows
Update for SP2 in the future.
Thanks

I'm sure Carey would love to help you, but as I mentioned in a previous
reply, MVPs are not
Microsoft employees. Try emailing (e-mail address removed).

Also, subscribing to security update bulletins is always a good idea... that
way you can keep on top of this.

MVP Sounds important to me! Like "Most Valuable Person", not slob, tha
would be S.L.O.B.
Who you calling a NB? What the heck is a NB anyway? (novice boob)
To the OP: That must be "other person," I think I'm getting it.
"Glad you got this fixed & thanks for posting back."
Did I miss something, or was it the NB that fixed this problem?

Sorry for the misunderstanding Lanwench,
"MVPs are not Microsoft employees."
But if I see a signature like this:
So & So's Name
_Microsoft_ MVP
I assume your directly connected with Microsoft.
By the way, how do you get the MVP designation? Could anyone get it?

Ah, but you know what "assume" means... :)

You get nominated by peers, generally - one way is by having no life and
helping out a lot in the newsgroups, which I certainly qualify for.
Authoring books, public speaking, etc, are other ways.

Most Valuable Professional - and no, we don't get paid, we are ordinary Joes
(and Janes) if you prefer that to slob. I think I got a nice business card
case & some MS Press books last year. I'm fairly sure I couldn't sell them &
retire on the proceeds, and I'm definitely sure I would've noticed any stock
options!!

Nota Bene. Latin for "note well."

No; Original Poster.

Well, seems the OP did after you helped out with your reply.

NB: your post/reply is hard to read as your newsreader isn't handling quoted

well - might want to use a regular NNTP client instead of a browser
interface. Try using msnews.microsoft.com as your NNTP server - no
authentication required, and you can subscribe to as many groups as you
like.
