Firewire Not Recognized By XP!

Paul

I just installed a PCI Adapter (USB2.0/FireWire Combo by
D-Link: DFB-A5)

The drivers for USB 2.0 are on the D-Link CD, but the
drivers for IEEE1394
are supposed to be already in the Windows XP Operating
system. However, I
am unable to use the IEEE1394 ports on my card because it
is not recognized.
The Device Manager shows a yellow exclaimation mark next
to the the new device.
D-Link customer service says there is nothing they can do
because the IEEE1394
drivers are supposed to be built in to the XP Operating
System.

It's either the card, the slot or the XP drivers...I
believe. The USB 2.0 ports on the new card work fine, so
I don't think the card is bad. I believe my XP (version
2002, service pack 1) does not have good IEEE1394 drivers
built in the way it is supposed to. What in the world
can I do about that?

Any ideas!?

Hi Paul,

The D-Link DFB-A5 is a USB 2.0/FireWire 400 combo PCI adapter card. Only
FireWire 800 (IEEE 1394b) devices require a firmware update to function with
Win XP SP2, FireWire 400 (IEEE 1394a) devices should function normally
without an update.

If you are not finding the appropriate D-Link drivers on the cdrom disc, you
could also try downloading them -
ftp://ftp.dlink.com/Usb/dfba5/Drivers/dfba5_driver_10.exe

Another thing to try is manually installing the drivers. I am talking about
right-clicking on the device with the yellow exclamation point, and selecting
properties while you are viewing the device in Device Manager. Click on the
driver tab and then select update driver. A wizard starts and you can specify
a location for the device drivers [either the CD or downloaded file(s)].

I do not know for sure if this will fix your problem, but it's something to try.
You never know, unless you try it.

I also find it interesting that...
when Windows XP first hit the market in 2002, it lacked USB 2.0 functionality
but fully supported FireWire devices. Now after XP's reincarnation with
Service Pack 2, the tables have been turned. Windows XP SP2 is fully
functional with USB 2.0 and some what error prone with FireWire.

Strange how that works...
