Firewire Connection between 2 laptops

Alan C. Brown

I would like to create a direct computer to computer connection between my 2
laptops (both running Win XP Pro SP2, full updated), using the Firewire
(I.Link, IEEE1394) ports and cable, so that I can transfer/copy files
between them.

Please advise on the procedure for doing so.

Thank you

Just connect them together.

The computers will assign themselves IP addresses (in the APIPA range) and
it should just work.

Here's a guide I found with pictures..

Note that this feature won't be in Vista, as announced here.

I tried to setup the laptop to laptop connection using the "IP Over
Firewire" method given by Gina Trapani on the Livehacker website.

However after the fourth step, which was to setup the internal IP addresses
(192.168.3.1 & 192.168.3.2), and the default subnet mask (255.255.255.0), in
the TCP/IP listing in the Properties of the "1394 Connection" of the 2
laptops, I hit a dead end.

The procedure given does not seem to tell you what to do to complete the
setup for a PC to PC (both WinO/S) connection, as opposed PC to Mac
(WinO/S-Mac O/S) connection(for which the example procedure is given).

Would appreciate if you, or anyone else, can provide the step by step
procedure to complete the PC to PC connection setup.

By the way, if you right click on the 1394 Connection icon, should the
factory default setting show it as being "Enabled" or "Disabled" ?

I changed it more than once, and I would like make sure that its at the
default setting.

Thank you
