Firewall

I am using XP sp3 on a new laptop. The security centre is telling me the
firewall is off. Yet on opening windows firewall in control panel - it is
clearly on.
Is there some other setting I should change/add?

Go to start --> run --> type services.msc --> press ok

Scroll down list of services until you find windows firewall/internet
connection sharing service and make sure that is started and set to
automatic

If it is then it might be worth downloading spybot sd or malware bytes and
scan for spyware. There may be a known issue but im not aware of any so i
would try the above until someone else responds.

You could have a situation where the boot sequence of the computer
is ordered incorrectly ( or slow ). The Security center check may be
detecting an error of the Firewall state because it hasn't fully loaded. It
would be worth checking your System Event Log and see if you are
logging any Warning(s)/Error(s) on bootup.
Click Start, Run ( Type ) EventVwr. Msc [Enter]
Expand the System log category and check the Right Pane for any
yellow or red entries.

You are quite right - there are lots of yellow warnings and red errors. Most
(not all) of the yellow are PlugPlayManager, some of the red are BTHUSB,
Dchp, Service Control Manager, srservice, IPNATHLP, browser, more I suppose.
Seems like I shouldn't be seeing these? What to do now??

Thanks David - all settings are as you've said.
Malware bytes reveals no malicious items...

It's basically take each one and try to decipher ownership, why it
happened ( dependency group failure ? ) and try to resolve. On a
new machine this is an abnormal condition. Some of the items can
be crosschecked with the Application log as the two logs will have
common issues. Unfortunately it's not a simple/straightforward type
of process to get fixed up.

OK - thanks for your help.
The solution is beyond me though...
