I am currently connected to the internet via a cable
modem. I do not have a network set-up. When I try to
activate my Windows XP firewall I get the following error
message... An error occurred while Internet Connection
Sharing was being enabled. The dependency service or
group failed to start. Please tell me what this means

Open computer management and find "services". Locate service named "internet
connection firewall". Open properties for it and dependencies tab. It shows
which other services that service is depending. One or more those services
are most likely disabled. You have to enable them, before windows can start
firewall service. To enable service, change startup type for that service.
