Firewall won't stay off

One possibility is to set the Firewall service to "Disabled". However
that's
not really a good idea. Whenever a program doesn't work to specs it's a
good idea to check for updates to the program. I'd also check McAfee's
website for any support groups or Knowledge Base articles that might be
related to your problem. It's my experience that both McAfee/Norton are
programs with too many issues to justify the expense and aggravation of
using them.

I installed McAfee Security Center on my computer, and I want to use its
firewall. When I open Windows Security Center, it shows that the McAfee
firewall is active, but if I check Windows Firewall it is also turned
on. I can turn it off, but the next time I start the computer Windows
Firewall is back on. How do I stop this?

Three unforgivable mistakes:

1. Installing McAfee SC; Because its bloated, troublesome and is hogging
resources.

2. Installing a Security Suite; Because one shouldn't lay all eggs in one
basket.

3. Disabling WindowsXP Firewall; Because for the average homeuser, the
Windows Firewall in XP does a fantastic job at its core mission and is
really all you need if you have an 'real-time' anti-virus program, [another
firewall on your router or] other edge protection like SeconfigXP and
practise Safe-Hex.
The windows firewall deals with inbound protection and therefore does not
give you a false sense of security. Best of all, it doesn't implement lots
of nonsense like pretending that outbound traffic needs to be monitored.

Oh well.

Interesting.
I have long followed main NG recommendations to run AVG (now Avast) and Zone
Alarm, Windows firewall off.

Zonealarm does cause problems with local network, so hoping to see some
discussion here!

(Once upon a time, received wisdom was to use Norton Speedisk to defrag and
abhor windows tools - clearly things can change...)

I have never had a virus or malware on my computer, ever. And, this is many
years.
I DO NOT however click on unknown or unexpected e-mail, or download trash.
I use Windows firewall only. I back up my system about once every two weeks.

That works if you truly have a Personal computer ie there are no children in
the house who have access!

I like an Acronis backup of drive C: every week at least - and if the backup
looks a bit too large I just go back to last known good backup (My Documents
all moved to D:). Prevents junk accumulating.
