Firewall installation

Seasons greetings. I want to install Comodo Firewall on my computer and
would like to know the correct method of uninstalling windows firewall. I
tried the other day by going to control panel>windows firewall and disabling
it there and then checked the security centre only to find it was still on. I
was able to turn that off but re-enabled it in case there was other settings
that needed to be changed. I've had a stop error [blue screen] before when in
my ignorance I tried to install K-Firewall without first uninstalling windows
firewall so now I err on the side of caution. Thanks

Windows Firewall can only be disabled, not uninstalled.

Hugh, it sounds like you have a third-party firewall installed that is
blocking the Windows Firewall from starting. Are you using any third-party
security software?

You can see which dependencies Windows Firewall have by opening the Services
administration tool under Administrative tools, double-clicking on Windows
Firewall, and clicking the dependencies tab?

Tom, I tried to enable my Windows Firewall through the Control Panel, but got
messages that the Windows Firewall settings connot be displayed because the
associated service was not running. The I tried to start that and got the
message that it connot start WF/ICS services. What is the "associated
services" and why can't I start this service? Help would be appreciated.

Your third-party firewall should do it for you during installation. If it
does not it is probably not written for Windows XP SP2 and you should think
twice about using it in the first place.

Out of curiousity, why are you trying to use a third-party firewall instead
of Windows Firewall?

My reason for installing a third party firewall is because I was advised to
do so by an 'expert' who told me windows firewall stops stuff coming in but
not going out.

That is correct. There are other firewalls that claim to stop stuff going
out. However, doing so in any meaningful way is impossible on Windows XP. It
is probably the greatest hoax perpetrated by the security industry on
unsuspecting users: that outbound host-based firewall filtering in Windows XP
makes a single bit of security difference. Usually it is espoused by
unscrupulous vendors who can't think of any legitimate reasons why you should
spend money on their product when the built-in one works as well, or
actually, in most cases, better: the third-party firewalls invariably do not
protect the system at boot.

What seems like a long time ago, in a former life, I wrote something that
talked about the technical reasons why outbound filtering makes little sense.
http://blogs.technet.com/jesper_johansson/archive/2006/05/01/426921.aspx.
More will be forthcoming in a book out in the new year.
