is it advisable to use both Win XP built-in firewall as well as Kaspersky
Anti-hacker together on WinXP SP2 system

Windows Firewall will automatically turn itself off when it detects that
you have installed KIS. It's generally not a good idea to have two
firewall programs running at the same time.

Somehow, on my system, the Windows firewall also seems to be on. Also, system
suddenly becomes very slow or hangs from time to time.

If you have Service Pack 2, and if you are using a firewall that is
compatible with SP 2 - basically, any software firewall written in the
last couple of years - Windows Firewall is automatically turned off.

To see which firewall is in effect on your computer, open the Windows
Security Center (Control Panel > Security Center) and click on the
double down arrows next to Firewall. The box will slide open and say:
<Name of firewall> is currently ON.

A firewall does not affect the speed of your computer or cause it to
hang. A firewall either permits or does not permit your computer to
connect with another computer on the network.

A firewall does not affect the speed of your computer or cause it to hang *. A firewall
either permits or does not permit your computer to connect with another computer on the
network.

* Except for any NIS firewall ... then all bets are off ;)

Well yes, but that's because it's Norton, not because it's a firewall.

Windows firewall did not automatically turn off when I installed Kaspersky
Anti-hacker. I have now removed Kaspersky and working with WinXP SP2
firewall. Is this enough security?

One more question? Should these services, NVidia graphics, NeroAhead or APC
power utility, start as Local Service , Network Service or as a service under
my user-name? Hope this question is clear.

Kaspersky Internet Security 6 turned off Windows Firewall for me. When
you setup the program it asks if you want to turn off Windows Firewall.

"Enough security" means, first and foremost, that you educate yourself
about the risks you face on the internet and commit yourself to safe and
careful behavior. No amount of software can protect someone from themselves.

Your second line of defense is software. You need - at minimum - a
software firewall, an antivirus program and an antispyware program, each
of which starts with your computer and runs in the background at all
times. Obviously you need to learn how to use these programs and you
need to keep them updated.

Your next line of defense is backup. After that you can add additional
tools to help your computer and your personal information to be protected.

You should allow software to setup the way it was designed.
