Firewall for W98

P

prospero33

I was invited to download the latest Zone Alarm and discovered it would
not install on my Windows98 OS. The older version still seems
effective, but I know its days of support are numbered. A bit of
browsing revealed that Kerio, Comodo, and Jetico's current versions
support only 2000 and XP.
Is there a freeware firewall I could use? I know, I know, buy a new
computer, you cheapskate.

Try Kerio 2.1.5

It's an old version, but many users are still more than happy with it.

try zone alarm 2.6 (2.6.88) - it can be found at
http://www.oldversion.com
I use it on a win95 box without problems.
oldversion.com also has sysgate and tiny personal firewall versions.

what's the best "SMALL" but simple firewall ???

I guess the question should be HOW small and HOW simple does it need
to be?

The KPF 2.1.5 zipfile is 1.96Mb. PERSFW.exe itself is 380kb. In the
past I've used Kerio 2.1.5 with Win98 on a P166 laptop with 32M RAM
and a 2G hard drive, and it used a fraction of the resources that the
freeware version of ZA did at the time.

As far as simplicity, Kerio can be about as easy or as geeky as you
want it to be.

Or perhaps try another OS. Won't 98 be obsolete on July 11th 2006?

Only obsolete if the user doesn't have a good firewall and AV, uses IE
as the default browser and likes to practice unsafe surfing. Ever
noticed how many of the "Critical Updates" are patches for IE?

I don't reply to trolls like Andy Mabbett or Doc (who uses sock puppets)
for instance. No adware, cdware, commercial software, crippleware,
demoware, nagware, PROmotionware, shareware, spyware, time-limited
software, trialware, viruses or warez for me, please.

I do use Puppy Linux Live CD most of the time -- it's terrific -- but I
still need the installed Windows for some things, notably to keep the
peace with my wife.

I second that on this one. I'm still using it on my Win98SE system
with no problems. In fact, I came back to it after the newer version
became more and more bloated.

Ah, there's always the SO... ;-)

Anyway, I'm using Sygate Personal Firewall 5.6 build 2808 and I'm quite
happy with it.

Not quite. It has been obsolete since june 1998.

Seriously, if you need to run DOS apps, set up a DOS box or use a WM.
And if you need to run Windows apps, the NT line has been superior in
almost (yes, almost, but still) every way from the get go. It's just too
bad most people did not understand that until Windows Me.

Then, of course, if all you want is to use an old computer for basic
surfing and office stuff, there is always Linux and BSD. You can
basically tailor both the system and the set of applications to match a
balance between functionality and speed which suits both you and the
computer, and you don't have to worry about stuff getting obsolete.

I had trouble with that, as did some other users. So I use ver 5.5
build 2710.

I used to use Kerio 2.1.5, but kept getting "too many applications
registered" or something similar. I assume I had too many permission
rules loaded.

I just bight a laptop today and got discount on Bullguard (AV, FW &
BackUp). Haven't installed it yet, but it looks promising (though
slightly off-topic, because it's not freeware...)
