Running 2 firewalls

E

elaich

After looking at www.firewallleaktest.com, and seeing Sygate's atrocious
showing, I decided to experiment. I installed Kerio 2.1.5 and let them
both run at the same time, to see if Kerio would catch some of the stuff
that Sygate allowed through.

The performance actually became worse - the system failed tests running
both firewalls that it passed running only Sygate. This tends to support
the idea of the two firewalls causing conflicts and hampering each
other's performance.

I was very surprised to see that Zone Alarm was a far better performer
against these tests than any of the other free firewalls. Look'N'Stop was
the best, but is also payware.

If only ZA didn't insist on staying in contact with home base. I don't
trust any app that does that. There's no reason for it except to collect
information.

Perhaps ZA keeps in touch with home for perfectly legit reasons. They
give it to us for free, and update it. They also have to keep in front of
the pack (of Sh*thouses). see what i mean ?. best wishes

There is a free version of Look'N'Stop at the bottom of the page I think.
I used it for quite q while and it was fine. Dropped all firewalls and
bought a router instead, but thats OT here

When I used to run it, that "calling home" was to check for updates.
Turning off automatic update put an end to it. Don't know if that still
applies. I quit using ZA because it's too much of a resource hog on W9X
systems. Currently I'm still using Kerio 2.1.5.

Sorry about that.Went and looked , guess you are right. They used to have
an older version they gave away, must have dropped it. Still, if I wasn't
using a router now I'd buy that one for several reasons.

Elaich,

Please check the URL you posted and correct it.

This URL does not work, and I could not call up anything similar in
Google. I'd really like to look at the report, so I'd appreaciate
knowing how to retrieve it.

Thanks!

That's correct. I use ZoneAlarm and it doesn't phone home. I have
automatic update turned off.

With all the carping people do about ZoneAlarm, it tends to get
overlooked that ZoneAlarm has proven to be the best free firewall
when it comes to security.

It may or may not be, but the situation I have is that I'm using ME. I
filter the internet through CookieCop 2 (no longer freeware, but the
copy I have was) and WebWasher. Along with Mozilla, that's a pretty big
hit on my resources. Running ZA is simply unfeasible. I know that if I
was running a version of XP, this wouldn't be an issue and who knows,
I'd probably be using ZA too. On the other hand, I'm pretty happy with
Kerio for the time being.

You're an idiot. These tests which are actually thte ones from GRC.com
are flawed.

No, really?

Or to check for updates, muppet.

No worries Barnie. I'm using Kaspersky now and it looks good.

That's a lot to be running between yourself and the Internet. I
try to keep the stuff that runs all the time to a minimum -- I've
got the firewall and the antivirus, and that's it. I tried other
software but found I didn't need anything else while surfing the Net.

Why don't you learn to phrase English properly before trying to flame
someone in it?

Back into the bozo file with you, bozo. This time it's death rather than

That may be, but I get ZERO popups or unders, and NO cookies. It's a
very effective arrangement and even though it's resource hungry, I only
very rarely run out of system resources. I'm not willing to give the
benefits of this arrangement up just so I can run Zone Alarm, especially
when Kerio works just as well for me.

My mileage varies. For instance, I have AVG7 installed, but don't allow
it to automatically run at system startup. I don't like it running in
the background. It's a gamble I'm willing to take because since I don't
use IE except for updating and Yahoo, I'm not nearly as at risk as those
who do. As for Outlook Express, it's not even installed on my system.

I hate and detest popups and popunders as well as advertising. WebWasher
does a real good job of making them scarce.

Anti-vir does not like (gave trojan warnings) "copycat.exe",
"wallbreaker.exe", "ghost.exe", "dnstester.exe", and "surfer.exe". I
will guess that with Anti-Vir and Sygate, I have good detection.
