Firefox, plugins and WinXP

M

MLC

Hi,
I'm thinking to switch from IE6 to Firefox as my default browser and I'm
wondering if I'll have problems with future Windows XP updates/patches.
In addition, having simply unzipped Firefox in a folder and created a
desktop shortcut manually, I see now that I don't have a Profile folder
under Application Data\Phoenix\. Do I have to create it?
Finally, I'd like to know which are for you the most useful and well working
plugins.
Thanks to all!

When you run Firefox for the first time it should create the profile
directory for you.

So long as you keep IE installed, you can use that to access Windows
Update.

I am very impressed with Adblock (http://adblock.mozdev.org/dev.html). It's
even better than the Proxomitron. It's converted me to Firefox.

I'm using it under Firefox with no problems until now.

Well the stable version does not really speed up browsing since it still
downloads the ads but just hides it.

The Dev version is even better in that it blocks ads from being
downloaded (like Proxo) but it has a bug that really slows down when
visiting sites that uses java.

Thank you very much for your list, I'll check all them.
Thanks also to all the others who answered.

Personally I use the Hosts file technique to block ads and web bugs etc.
I find it helps improve page rendering quite a bit with Firefox.
A combination of populating the hosts file and the freeware program
eDexter seems to be a great combination:

The hosts file technique is nice, but...

1) It's not flexible, you either block the whole domain or you don't.
With adblock you can use regular expressions to block only certain
questionable pages or scripts.

2) A large hosts file will slow down old computers a lot.

I know of another software, DNSkong, but it doesn't seem to work on my
computer.

My understanding based on the releases note is that Mozilla Seamonkey
(and probably Firefox)does not require Edexter any more since the "hang"
(or rather delay) problem is solved.

Nuke Anything and Flash Click and View go a long way to restoring sanity to
web pages.

Sorry to nitpick but technically, those are extensions not plugins. Plugins
are little helper programs that allow you to handle acrobat files, flash,
Real , etc
