Firefox 0.9 released

Aaron

can you install it on top of 0.8?

You should know that most of the critical browser setting information
such as bookmarks, passwords will be stored in your profile directory
In 0.8 it was in

Documents and Settings\<UserName>\Application Data\phoenix (for XP)

This is not the same as the directory you install the program files
typically c:\program files\firefox etc.

In 0.9 they moved the profile to

Documents and Settings\<UserName>\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox

The installer will automatically copy all the info in the old profile to
the new one. You can remove the phoenix folder if you like**

**Nighty users take note! This does not apply to you. Read the release
notes for more details.

It is *not* recommended however to install the program files in the same
directory as before, eg c:\program files\firefox , either delete the old
directory, or better yet move the old program file elsewhere (you may
need some of the info there later) and install firefox 0.9 in the same
place as before

By using the same profile, you will retain most of the basic settings you
will however lose the following

1) Mycroft search plugins- Firefox's built in "googlebar" - These are
kept in your program files, under /searchplugins, so you can either
reinstall them, or just copy them wholesale to that directory

2) Plugins for realplayer, flash etc. You will just have to reinstall
them.

3) Themes - There's a new theme for 0.9 btw

4) Extensions - usually extensions installed in the profile directory are
retained, but in this case, because a new extension system was
introduced, all of your extensions will need to be installed again

Hope this helps

I've been looking to install a new browser. Tried Opera but it is too
busy and has a banner ad. I've installed Firefox and I think it is
really great. Very fast. I think I'll keep it.

So, here's my question:
If I uninstall IE, when I go for updates at the Windows Update site,
will it know I don't have IE any more? And if I uninstall IE will all
of the Hotfixes associated with it disappear from my Control Panel or
will I be able to remove them myself, and may I do that?

You don't say what operating system you're using, but if I were you, I
wouldn't try to uninstall IE, because it is tied in with the OS; in my
case Windows XP, and I will need to continue updating XP regularly to
get the security fixes. It seems that Windows Update only works with
IE, and that's the only thing I use it for. ;-)

Thanks, Michael. I had a feeling that would be the case. I use XP
also.

*sigh*....I downloaded it, put it in a new directory, opened it and it
ran fine. Went to get a dozen or so of the extensions I wanted and
'installed' them...then closed Firefox, since it needs to be restarted
before recognizing the extensions. When I tried to restart, it simply
didn't display. It appeared in the "ctrl-alt-delete" list, but it said
"not responding"...closed it and tried again....still nothing. Deleted
entire folder for hopefully totally fresh start so I could do the
extensions one at a time, in case I had conflicts. Recreated folder and
installation with NO extensions and guess what....nothing. Now it does
not run even with theoretically 'new' installation. (even rebooted) I
suppose some setting was left in the registry....

All I am really saying is that I 'suggest' that you do any extensions
one at a time, restarting after each one, so that if something bombs you
will have some idea what caused it. I have no idea how to get 0.9 going
again, other than extensive registry editing which I am not really adept
at.....

Will mess with it some more when I'm in a better mood......

be careful!!

Deleting the profile that was created should give you a fresh start, I
think.

thanks...but there is no profile anymore...I deleted the entire
directory (since there was no uninstall program) and re-created the
entire directory in a new location and re-installed the whole program
from scratch....now I have an entire setup and set of folders under
c\program files\firefox with a firefox.exe that simply does not
work...it loads 'something'--enought to make Windows think it is loaded
into RAM...but absolutely nothing displays on screen....it just stops.

There are advantages & disadvantages to the Mozilla/Firefox system of
making all the plugins & extensions user selectable and
configurable....if it works, you have it the way you want, if not, its
REALLY hard to sort out what went wrong. I may have mis-read which
extensions were correct.....though I tried to be sure they were all
approved for 0.9.
I use Opera a lot, and though I can't do a lot more than turn on &
off a few options, at least the package you get works.

*shrug*....I'll do some reading in the forums. Maybe someone else has
had to do this.

....(funny thing is, I still have FireBIRD 0.6 and Firefox 0.8 installed
& working...along with Mozilla. I just thought I'd like to try the new
toy before I cleaned out the old...maybe I'll wait...*grin*)

Profiles are not put in the c\program files\firefox directory. They
go in a subdirectory of %appdata%, the location of which varies
depending on what OS you are using. Firefox 0.8 profiles lived in a
directory called \phoenix\, and Firefox 0.9 profiles live in one
called \Mozilla\Firefox\. You probably still have both sets of
profiles.

Once you get Firefox 0.9 going, with no extensions to start with,
you can get the ones that work with 0.9 at
<http://update.mozilla.org/>. If you go there using Firefox 0.9,
the update site will detect your version and display only
extensions/themes that work with it. (You can override that in case
you want to see extensions for other browser versions.)

Not all the extensions I need are available yet for 0.9, so I am
going to stick with 0.8 a while longer.

well...that at least makes sense!

I may also....after I double check which extensions I 'really' need.
Thanks again.

Huh? Tab browser extensions *IS* compatiable with 0.9 for a long time
(well since the change in extensions API) already. Not sure why it's not
listed on mozilla.update, except that the developers of Firefox don't
like it much.

Do you remember which extensions you installed? Could be just bad luck,
sometimes the 2 extensions you install, lock each other out.

No. Firefox adds almost zero entries to your registry . It's your
profile that is messed up.

It's compatible? Is that a double-my-money-back guarantee? ;-)

I still need some other extensions, though, so I'll wait a bit.

Thanks, though.

got it fixed...thanks to you an Q for advice....I'll keep 0.8 while I
see how 0.9 develops...

Well it's as good as you can get to for a third party extension as
complicated as one of that size. For sure it recognises the new extension
manager which's basically what we are talking about here. And unlike some
other repackaged extension, this one is actually done by the author of
the original extension.

You can also go ahead to use some of the unpatched extensions, most will
work, but will not appear in the new extension manager. To make them
appear, install this extension http://www.pikey.me.uk/mozilla/?
extension=soe

You won't be able to uninstall extensions (an option available to all
the new 0.9 patched extensions), but otherwise you can handle it as
before.
I still need some other extensions, though, so I'll wait a bit.

I basically got all of mine working already ,except for 2.

Thanks, though.
