I think my file extensions are "messed up"
I was trying to copy a .dat file from an ini and find that it is associated
with wmv[mediaplayer] . I am sure I must have done something wrong at some
time for this to happen. What should the .dat extension be?

Hi

..dat files can and are created by programs and then are used specifically by
that program. There is no way to associate a .dat file with a specific
program. From a command prompt type

assoc

What association do your .dat files have to which program?

my "Opera" ini 'wand.dat' is apparently associated with wmv file [mediaplayer
tries to open it if I try to open]
Is this correct?
Should it be a media file. The passwords work Ok in Opera but as I was
trying to save my passwords for a re-install on a new computer I thought it
strange that they were saved as such.
Old men should not be owrrying about such things!

Julsie,

* Go to 'Control Panel > Folder Options > File Types'
* Scroll down to the .DAT reference
* Right-click & select 'Delete'
* Restart computer

ps-there is no need to click on a .dat file. If you do, it will ask you to
select a program to open it with. You don't want to go through this process
because there are many programs that use .dat files.

I followed your advice [thanks] and .DAT no longer appears in my list of
'file associations list' Is that supposed to be so?

Yes. .DAT files are now unassociated, which is the default state when you
install Windows XP.
