A friend of mine sent me some photos, jpg, yesterday but for some reason the
extension .dat was added to the file names either at his end or mine, not
sure.
How do I open these files to view them?

thanks in advance

Detach them, then rename them to .jpg.

I think I have performed that task but I still cannot open the files.
Can you explain/clarify detach and rename, pleaase.

I will if you tell me what EMail client you use (Outlook Express,
Outlook 97, Outlook 2000, Outlook 2003, HotMail, other).

Sorry, should have mentioned that.
I use Outlook Express.
Office XP Professional.

1. While the message is open, click File / Save Attachment
2. Specify a file name, e.g. "c:\AuntyMabel.jpg"
3. Double-click "My Computer".
4. Navigate to "C:\".
5. Double-click "AuntyMabel.jpg".

Again thanks.
Have tried to carry out the procedure but when I try to save the attachment
I do not get the option to rename the file as advised.
All I get is the option to select a folder to save it too.
Am obviously doing something wrong.

That's no great problem! Save the attachment to the specified
folder, then do this:
3. Double-click "My Computer".
4. Navigate to that folder.
5. Right-click the saved file, then rename it to "AuntyMabel.jpg".
6. Double-click "AuntyMabel.jpg".

Did as advised but file will not open!!
All other JPEG files in the same folder open as required.

When reporting problems, be a little more specific.
"Will not open" does not tell us anything at all. There
are at least three things that you need to tell us to stop
us from playing guessing games:
1. The exact name of the file you're trying to open.
2. The way you're trying to open it. From Explorer?
From My Computer? From a Command Prompt?
3. The verbatim message you see on the screen when
you're trying to open the file.

Sorry for appearing to play guessing games with you.
1) File: Photos for Mam (Tsunami) Picture 125.jpg[85_94].dat
2) Trying to open from Outlook Express:
3) Message: "This file does not have a program associated with it for
performing this action. Create an association---etc."
4) If I create a dat file under folder options and set to open with
"Windows Picture and Fax Viewer", when I try to open it in the My Documents
Folder I get the message: "No Preview Available".

Hope this stops the guessing

I thought you were already able to view .jpg files, and that you
were going to rename the file

Photos for Mam (Tsunami) Picture 125.jpg[85_94].dat

to

Photos for Mam (Tsunami) Picture 125.jpg

If you do this and if you still get the message "No Preview Available"
then there may be a problem with the file itself. It is perhaps not a
..jpg file. If you like then you can send me a copy so that I can have
a look at it myself. Replace every "z" with an "s" in this address:
(e-mail address removed).

The file you sent me has been encoded in some way.
To decode it requires knowledge of the encoding
method. Explain how you created this file. If you
received it by EMail, ask the sender how he encoded
it. If the sender claims that he did not encode it, ask
him to send a copy to me directly, using the same
address before.

Thank you,
I have asked Eoin to forward the mail to you exactly as he sent it to me and
to explain the procedure he used.

This does not exactly appear to be a burning issue. It's now
more than three days since your last post, with no mail in
the box I gave you. It's a temporary box - I'll stop monitoring
it 24 hours from now.

My sincerest apologies for appearing to ignore you.
I had a small operation recently so have been out of action but all is fine
now.
I am sorry to say that obviously Eoin also let us down by not forwarding the
message to you.
Since we spoke last Eoin has put all the photos on disc so at least I can
read them from that.
We still don't know how to open the originals but I think we will leave it
there.

Again apologies and thanks a million for your help.
