giving files new extensions

The last two files I've downloaded off kazaa have
completed successfully. However, when they finish, they
don't automatically rename to their filename, as they
should. These are video files, one was 126MB and the
other was 76MB. And I like to convert my video files to
WMV, so they save hard drive space, but first I have to
put the file into a format that Movie Maker can import
properly, such as MPG. For the first video file, the
126MB, I used TMPEG without any problems. But, with the
76MB file, TMPEG crashes every time I select that .DAT
file to be converted. I think it'd be much easier to
convert the file by giving it a new extension (.AVI,
which it should've been), but it doesn't seem to work.
The file remains a .DAT. Any help on this would be
GREATLY appreciated. Also, I only have dial-up, so
downloading these again would be a great waste of my time

In KaZaA, while you're downloading file, it changes the extensions as
".dat". When download has complated, it will be changed as ".avi, .mpg or
..mp3"...etc

Furthermore, if you want to save more hard drive space (small video files),
try "AVI To VMV Converter" program. You can download it from my FTP site ==>
ftp://195.174.192.233/programlar/AVI-WMV Converter.zip .

If you can't download the file from my site, there are alternatives:

http://www.download.com/
http://www.stoik.com/

Ok?
Good luck!

Renaming a file to AVI will NOT convert it. You must use a conversion
program. Sounds like the DAT file from Kazaa is not complete or it would
convert, unless it was corrupt to start with, which is not too surprising
from Kazaa.
