Billy Bob!

I am thinking of upgrading to Win XP and have done some
research about this O/S. I have found that when you
register the O/S it take a finger print of the Hardwear in
your comp. then saves it on a data base. Which in turn
lets you reinstall Win XP on the same computer, since it
cross refences with the database fingerprint to prevent
piracy. What happens when you install new hardwear? Do you
have to buy another XP disc? For every time you upgrade?

The major hardware part that XP bases the finger print on is the computer's
motherboard. The other hardware components can be changed as often as you
would like. If you change the motherboard, you will have to do a XP repair
installation on top of the installed XP. This is so to re-initialize the
database and let you re-activate the XP.

As for the re-activation, XP has a 120 day Internet activation lock out
period. That is to say that if you would need to re-activate XP, by the
Internet, you should be successful in activating it if it has be 120 days
(or greater) since the last request. If it is notm the use the Microsoft
Activation phone number provided on the activation screen.

Hello,

I second Yves' recommendation of using the phone option in certain
situations. I switched motherboards at home, used the phone option, and
didn't have any trouble at all.

Good recommendation there.

Thanks!
