Finding an alternative to bmp format.

Recently I have been unable to save any photo from
computer to disk other than in bmp. This suddenly happened
for no apparent reason. I have had no problem for years!
No alternaive format is allowed and I cannot even type
over or erase bmp!! I am using WIndows XP Professional.
Any help or advice would be very much appreciated.
