cannot download photos inXP in ANY OTHER FORM than BMP

I cannot download pictures from the web as JPG's or ANY other form other than
BMP. When I right click and the save window comes up, the drop down menu
ONLY contains the choice of Bitmap (BMP), with no other choices to "save as".
Any suggestions as to how to save in different formats?

To get JPG back.
In the web browser, click on Tools on the top bar and Internet Options. A
window will open. Click on the button "Delete files" in the center of this
window and OK.

Thank you Yves. Unfortunately, this doesn't work. I've done the "delete
files" task, but the same thing still happens. When I choose to save a
picture, the "save picture" window comes up, but at the bottom of this window
where the two spaces are for the title, and "save as type" are, the "save as
type" ALWAYS says bitmap(bmp), with no other choices in the drop down menu.
Any other suggestions? Thanks so very much for your help and suggestions.
