Find / Search problem

Slartibartfast

I have recently moved from Windows 98 to XP.

Under W98 I was able to use the "Find" utility to search a specified
directory to find files which had been modified within the previous XX days.
I was able to save this specific "find" so that I could call it up by a
click on a desktop icon.

(The reason I used this was because I wanted to copy some or all of the
files on my office computer onto a Zip Disk to put onto my computer at home,
and vice versa.)

Under XP I can't find a way to make the "Search" utility do this, so I'm
wondering whether there are any freeware utilities which will do the job.
I'm not asking for a synchronise or backup program; just a simple search or
find tool on which I can save the parameters so I can repeat the search at
the click of a button.

TIA for any advice.

I find it wonderful and with a very little memory footprint, dispite its
many features.

I'm just having a look at it now, and although it might be useful for other
reasons, I still can't do a search easily. With Windows 98 it was as simple
as a double-click on the desktop icon and then a click on "Find Now".

Thanks anyway, and I'll have a play with it tonight to see if I'm missing
something.

Thanks for replying. I've just had a quick look at it, and it seems not to
like dates in this century. It is Y2K compliant isn't it?

I'll have another look tonight - perhaps I'm doing something wrong.

TweakUI for XP (Microsoft PowerToy) allows you to restore the Classic
search mode.

http://download.microsoft.com/download/whistler/Install/2/WXP/EN-
US/TweakUiPowertoySetup.exe

short URL:

You can then go File - Save Search to desktop

So many things in XP are advances that need to be undone.

Thanks Tom, but even with this, the next time I do a find, the directory I
searched in when I saved it is replaced with "Local Hard Drives (C:;G:)",
whereas in W98, the saved find would always call up the same directory. Am
I (or my machine) doing something wrong, or is that the way it works in XP?

Yes, you're right. Tracker may be your best bet, it will remember its
last settings.
