Find out physical locations of HD without inspecting?

How do I use the Properties of HD to figure out the physical location
of the HD?

The primary and secondary channels from the motherboard are not hard
to figure out.

Such as:
Onboard Primary ATA Channel
Maxtor 6L060J3: Location 0 (Primary ATA Channel)
WDC WD600BB-75CAA0: Location 1 (Primary ATA Channel)

Onboard Secondary ATA Channel
_NEC DVD_RW ND-3520A: Location 0 (Secondary ATA Channel)
ATAPI CDRW 52X32: Location 1 (Secondary ATA Channel)

Is "location 0" the connection at the end of the IDE cable while
"location 1" is the connection in the middle? Or 0 the master, 1 the
slave?

I also have 3 HDs connected to an IDE card (with its own primary and
secondary slots). I can't really tell which one is which from the
properties.

Maxtor 6 Y160P0: Bus Number 0, Target ID 2, LUN 0
WDC WD12 00BB-00GUA0: Bus Number 0, Target ID 0, LUN 0
WDC WD25 00JB-00EVA0: Bus Number 0, Target ID 1, LUN 0

The bottom 2 are connected together to one of the slots and the top
one is on another slot alone. The info does not have primary or
secondary. The only difference they have are Target ID 0, 1, and 2.
How can I tell which one is which by looking at that info without
physically opening my case and look?

If you look at the label on the drives (specifically the WD drives) the
part number is printed on it. The 00GUA0 and 00EVA0 are visible.

By the way, those drives have a shocking failure rate - as does the
Maxtor. The two worst drives around at the moment.

Its not always possible without checking the serial number of the HD
and that will usually need to see the drive physically removed to read it.

No, not if master/slave jumpering is used, only if cable select is used.

Yes, unless cable select is used. But the master can be
on either drive connector etc with master/slave jumpering.

And if you don't intend to open the case, the point of the whole exercise is what?

thank you all for the suggestions. I've placed a label at the side of
the HDs and can identify them easily now.
