Finalizing a DVD burned on another computer

I volunteer in my church's media center, where we make copies of
service recordings. Once in a while the video booth, where the masters
are made, will send down a DVD that they forgot to finalize. The
computer has no problem playing the video, but the duplicators we use
flake out totally on them.

Is there any simple way, without the expense of a full DVD burning
package, to pop the DVD-R (that's the media we use, by the way) into
the XP system we have (with a DVD-RW drive) and (a) check to see if the
disc is finalized yet, and, if not, (b) finalize it?

The CD should be finalized on the machine that created the CD, using the
burning software that was used in it's creation.

So, if the folks who burned the master have already gone home & locked
up the room with their computer, I'm outta luck?
