Filmstrip Option for Graphics Files is Missing from Views Icon Menu

J

Jack Danniel

Hi everyone.

I'm using XP Pro, and recently, I discovered the Filmstrip option for
my graphics files is missing from my Views icon menu. I have options
for Thumbnails, Tiles, Icons, List, and Details.

How do I go about adding the Filmstrip option? Is it available for
only certain file types? Thank you!

Jack;

Filmstrip view is available in picture folders.

Right click the Folder | Properties | Customize tab |
Use this folder type as a template: | Pick one:
Pictures (best for many files)
Photo Album (best for fewer files) | Apply | OK

Jack,

I believe it's available only for MyPictures folder. IOW, only for "FolderType" set as "MyPictures" or "Pictures". If you don't get the option even in MyPictures folder, open Folder Options and reset all folders. Or, see this tip from Keith Miller to set the FolderType for one particular folder.

http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_common_tasks.htm

You can also use Process Explorer from www.sysinternals.com and switch to handles view, in order to find the 'Bag Number'. You can change the FolderType to "Pictures" for any folder, in order to have the FilmStrip option in the View menu.

But Customise isn't available on some folders. But then those one's don't reset, normally.

You can follow the bags MRU just by reading it. The folder names are in the binary data.
For special folders one can tell by their sub folders. I can follow it. The top level are the folders on the desktop (incl hidden ones).

The top level are the folders on the desktop
If I understand correctly, are they always assigned a Bag value of "1"?

Only items you actually visit are listed
At HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\ShellNoRoam\BagMRU
The sub keys are the folders visited on the desktop. For me the named value 3 is My Computer (and I know this because it's sub values are the folders in My Comp like D:\ and C:\). For me named value 1 is C:\. So I look up subkey 1. Which shows the folders on C. It also has a node slot of 0xb (11). So I look up
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\ShellNoRoam\Bags\11\Shell

which is the settings for C: accessed via desktop\my computer\c:\

I leave it up to kieth to put it in words that non techs might understand. Which is why I'm telling you but don't tell posters, they just wouldn't understand and would ask more questions.

Have you heard of something called Kellytalk. It's how Mr Kelly talks to Kelly. Kelly is spatially challenged. She knows not north, south, east, or west, nor left or right, nor yards or miles (and don't try metres or kilometres with her at all). So to give her directions you explain to Mr Kelly, who translates to kellytalk, and then she's right.

This bags is davidtalk.
