Fill In field question

When I create a document with a fill in field, as soon as I create the field,
I get prompted to answer the prompt. If I click ok without filling anything
in, no field code appears (althought it is there), and it looks awful...like
iI forgot to write something there.

For example: Requirements Review on and documented
(There is a field code between on and documented)

I have field code shading set to Always, but it still does not appear.
Also, when I close the file and re-open it, I do not get prompted to fill in
the date.

This is a template, and I need it to prompt when the user uses the template
to create a document.

Can anyone help?

Either use macrobutton fields which will give you proper spacing and a
prompt http://www.gmayor.com/Macrobutton.htm or use ASK fields at the start
of a document which prompt for information and place that info with REF
fields.

For a more elegant approach create a userform to gather the variable data
and run it on creating/opening the document Word MVP FAQ - Userforms
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/Userforms.htm

Use date calculations for date fields

I looked into the macrobutton fields, and none apply. I don't use any macros
in the document (we cannot, because of virus restrictions), and nothing
built-in is applicable.

I don't need bookmarks, so the Ask field is not feasible either.

This isn't a form...it's a template, and as such cannot be protected.
Besides, I only have one little field where I want the user to be prompted to
enter a date.

Isn't there a way to NOT have the document ask me to populate the field when
I insert it, so a shaded field code stays in place?

I just tried using the example in your link, and it didn't work. Nothing
happened...it just acted like regular text with no prompt when you clicked on
it, which is what the info in your link said to do.

I think I will just have to resort to putting <type date here>, then telling
the user to type over the prompt.

The information in your link did not work. I copied and pasted their example
in, and it acted like regular text, and did not prompt me for anything when I
clicked it.

You cannot copy and paste the example. You have to create a field by
pressing Ctrl+F9 and then typing the required text in it. The article
(obviously unwisely) assumes that you know how to insert a field.
