Files won't open when double clicked.

Whenever I double click on a file with the .XLS extention excel opens
but the file does not, word documents open fine. The only way to open
an excel file is to open the program first and then go to the file menu
and then choose open and then find the file and open it from there.
Also the .XLS file type is associated with excel. Any help would be
great.

I have no solution, but the following MAY provide a clue.

I once had a player (A) that I used to play files of type xxx (e.g.). I
then installed player B, and changed the association for xxx to use B.
Everything looked correct in File Types, etc., but whenever I
double-clicked on a xxx file, it was being opened by A. It made no
sense. This continued even after I went through the "Open With"
process, browsing for the file and clicking "Always Use this
program...".

I finally went to Player A's UI and turned off the association for xxx,
and that did it. I can't explain it. For one thing, I did not invoke
Player A during these events. For another, you expect the associations
to be set once during program setup, not every time you invoke the
player.

Anyway, I suppose all I'm saying here is that if you had ANOTHER
program that you had previously used to open XLS files, see if there is
anything in it that controls file associations and turn it off.
