Files not deleted

I deleted a number of big files (about 4 13GB avi fles)
and got the message that they were too big for the recycle
bin, did I want to permanently delete them to which I said
yes.

Now the files have disappeared but the space on the hard
drive has not been freed up and shows up as huge blocks of
fragmented files.

Is there any way of getting rid of the deleted files?

Try running checkdisk with "fix errors" checked. You will have to
reboot to automatically fix any errors.
