Files disappeared - now I think they are hidden - how do I retriev

I'm using XP

I saved a file by accident in Temp files, and so I went to look for it,
remembering that it would be a "hidden" file. I stumbled on C:\Documents and
Settings, and clicked View and Customize This Folder. There I found
Attributes: Read Only, Hidden and Archive. I clicked on the Hidden and
Archive boxes and pressed Apply, because I thought it would show me where my
temp file was. When I did this, everything in my profile disappeared. I was
very unhappy.

A few minutes later, I was looking for the files, and found one using the
search function, looking for hidden files. So it seems they are still here,
but how do I make the visible again?

Many thanks

You can view hidden files with a setting.
start/run, type:
control folders
View tab, scroll down to put a dot in the radio button for 'show hidden
files and folders'
also uncheck the 'hide extensions for known filetypes' checkbox.
