I am running XP home addition here's my process & problem:
I click Start, Programs, WORD, or EXCEL (any of office products), file open,
click drop down window to select a folder, this is where it freezes and will
not respond. If I click a second time I get a message "Not Responding".

I have tried, cleaning up files, I took it to the Geek Shop and they cleaned
up my computer made sure I had no viriuses, when I returned home the first
time I tried it - it worked but after the first time it went back to the same
problem.
Please help if you can.

Have you tried running Check Disk utility? I reccomend frunning Disk
defragger first. That smoothes the process of the check disk utility. not to
mention corrects a lot of file open problems.

I forgot to mention a few other things. check your memory usage you may have
programs running in the background hogging all of your memory. Also do some
spyware/adware scans and a virus scan to just make sure you dont have a
virus.

Clean out your temporary files, Internet files and recyclebin. Defragment the drive. Ensure that you have enough memory to support the progrms running.

I tried all your suggestions but it still doesn't work correctly. Anything
you can think of?

Hi I have struggled with the same problem for a while now and I have just
found a solution that worked for me, when clicking file open, change the
"Files of type" drop down at the bottom to "Word documents (*.doc)" and not
"All word documents"
