Slow computer with freezing

i am using windows xp,sp2 home,with dsl,but my computer is very very slow.
Also,it freeze up from time to time. When i try to shut down, some of the
programs freeze and I get msg that program is not responding. The computer
has 250mg of Ram.Can anyone help me?
