File shrinks after close w/o saving!?

I have an Excel 2007 file that has been flagged shared with "Track changes
while editing..." checked. There are changes that can be viewed on the
History sheet. I then close the file without saving any changes. I then
immediately reopen the file and select Track Changes, Highlight changes and
select All. I get a dialog box telling me there are no changes with the
specified properties regardless of the properties that have been selected.

When I look at original's file properties, size is 17,122 bytes. After
closing without saving, file size is 16,690. The modified date of the file
remains the same!

So, how are changes made to the file even though no changes were saved? The
only way to return to viewing the changes is to copy back the source file.

Thanks for the explanation.

Best to ask the experts in an Excel newsgroup.

If this is an operating system issue then I thought it best to ask here.
I've also posted in an Excel forum on the chance that it's an application
issue. Can you suggest a means for testing to see which it is?

Two comments:
- No, it cannot possibly be an operating system issue. Windows knows nothing
about change tracking - this is handled exclusively by the application.
- While it can be appropriate to post a question in two newsgroups, it is
not a good idea to multi-post it as this will cause duplication of effort.
Have a look here to see why you must use crossposting in such cases:

Point taken about cross-posting. Apologies.

I appreciate that XP would not know about tracking changes. My thought was
that the OS was responsible for opening and closing files and that somehow
this process allowed for a change in the file contents. Is this not the case?

Yes, Windows is responsible for opening/closing a file. However, it only
writes to disk what it is instructed to write by the application. It has no
mind of its own about which bits it's going to rewrite and if it should or
shouldn't include some duplication of data.
