File Sharing

I am still experiencing the same symptom as I started with.
When I go to My Network places, Nd click on Shared Docs on Linda
(homeupstairs)
I instantly receive a message that says "\\Homeupstairs\shareddocs is not
accessable. You might not have permission to use this network resource.
Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access
permissions. Access is denied."
This message happens so instantaneously it's like it's in a prefetch file
just waiting for me. Everything else takes a bit longer to start, even if I
just recently used the program.

OK, having just resolved an LSP / Winsock problem, I guess you now need to check
authentication / permissioning. XP Home uses Simple File Sharing, and Guest
authentication.

Now I think I'm getting somewhere. On linda's computer (both xp home), I
unchecked "allow network users to change my files" under the shared documents
properties. and I can now read the (access) the files. this leaves the
question: Is it possible to set permissions to allow me read/write permission
on another computer in XP Home ed?

With XP Home and Simple File Sharing, if you activate the Guest account properly
(on the server), any files shared with anyone will be shared with everyone on
the network. That's why it's called "Simple File Sharing".

I know it's supposed to work that way, but on my computer (ed's) I have
"allow network users to change my files" enabled and linda's can access ed's.
When I check the same box on linda's , ed's is not allowed access. I need
to be able to write to linda's shared docs from ed's.

Well, I'm glad that you know how it's supposed to work. Your previous question
was "Is it possible...", and my answer was "Yes, under certain conditions...".
So now, we have to ask, what is the difference between Ed's and Linda's
computers? Start with this article, which discusses XP Home and advanced file
sharing techniques:

On the above referenced blog, a technique was mentioned that finally fixed
the problem. I removed file sharing from shared docs on both machines,
rebooted, then rechecked file sharing on the shared docs folder, checking
"allow network users to change my files", and rebooted. I now have
read/write access both directions. Note: the reason I chose Home ed. was
that I don't have time or interest to become an IT expert. I just want the
software to work "out of the box".
Thank you very much for all your help and time you've spent.

Alright, finally! Thanks for letting us know!

That particular blog, I should point out, came from another blog that started
out (long ago) as a rant titled "Simple File Sharing Isn't". SFS is great when
it works, but when it doesn't it is a pain in the @ss to get right. Congrats on
sticking with it to the end.
