File sharing on wireless network

I am trying to set up a wireless home network with a desktop, laptops and
wireless router. From the desktop (Windows 2000), I can see the laptop in
the network. From the laptop (Windows XP), I try to add a network place and
get to the name of the desktop and can go no further. I have shared my
desktop's hard drive and the sharing hand is showing. I think maybe there is
something more I need to do with permissions but I am stumped and any further
ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Karin,

You probably need to add your Windows XP login details to the Windows 2000
box. By default the Windows XP box will try to login to the W2K box with
your current username/password or if you are using Simple File sharing it
will try the guest account. It also depends on whether you are using Windows
XP Home or Professional.

You can try enabling the guest account in the Windows 2000 computer.
Right click on "My Computer", choose "manage" from the menu.
Expand "system tools", Expand "Local Users and Groups", Choose Users.
Right click on guest user, choose properties and untick "Account is disabled".

If this doesn't help then post back and let me know which Windows XP you
have (Home or Pro).

Sincerely,
Elizabeth

Thank you for your response, I will try this during lunch. I was also trying
to map a network drive on the XP (home version btw) laptop but couldn't ever
get past the user id and password.....my choice was to use their hotmail.com
account and password which was not successful or something I type in, which I
have no idea what that would be.

I'm thinking of getting an upgrade of Windows XP pro and then not having to
deal with this problem....but if I can save $90 I would like to!!!

Karin,

I am in the process of setting up my home network as well. Win2k is the
computer that is directly hooked up to the router and WinXP home is a
wireless connection. You have to have the user (their login name) set
up as a user on your Win2K machine.

Go to Control Panel/admin tools/computer management/local users
groups... right click on users and select new user. Set up user name
the same as the login on the XP machine. Set a password of your choice,
set password to never expire.

Reboot both machines and see if you can not gain access to your win2000
machine by using the user name and password you set up.

I have my XP machine sharing my shared directors and a printer is
shared and even installed on the xp machine. My problem is that I can
not see the XP machine on my Win2K machine. I can not even find it if I
search for it. Both machines are on the same network. I have checked the
XP and it has a firewall running but when I did the wizard it said that
it had set up the firewall for network file sharing and printer
sharing. Where do I go from here. My main goal was to have the XP share
my files in the Win2k but would like to have it work both ways.

Any suggestions Anyone??????
