I have read about a USB to USB file share "cable" that works with Windows 95
up to and including Windows 2000. But my question is - can this be done with
WinXP?
Running two computers (desktop and laptop) with WinXP Pro and wish to be
able to transfer files and printer share.

The best way to do this is with ethernet - you'll need a cat5e crossover
cable if there's no hub/switch/router between the two boxen. You'll
need a network interface card (NIC) in each machine, or a
usb-to-ethernet adapter. Create your own little LAN and share out the
resources you want.
