File/Save AS or Open: Default Settings

R

Robert T

When I asked this question earlier in the week, I inadvertently referred to
Windows Explorer. However, that was incorrect, I'm talking about the
File/Open or File/Save As box.

When I select File/Save As or Open, the setting is always LIST, which drives
me crazy. Yes I can manually change the settings, but every time I open the
File/Save As or Open dialog box, it always reverts back to LIST. That is very
annoying and frustrating.

I want the default setting to be DETAILS sorted by NAME. There must be a way
to make this the default setting as opposed to LIST which is apparently the
current default setting.

Thanks,
Robert

Hi Robert,

As far as I know, each program either has the ability to control that
dialog box or leave it to Windows. I use WordPerfect and I can
configure it however I want. But most rely on Windows Explorer and the
default can't be changed.

Here is a utility you could try:

Haven't used it myself but it sounds like it may help you. It has a 30
day trial and $20 after that.

Hi Terry:

Thanks for your response.

The File Open/SaveAs box apparently doesn't rely upon Win Explorer because
on my computer, that setting is Details/Name.

In addition, there must be some way to change the setting because no matter
what I try, it always reverts back to LIST view. That tells me there must be
a setting in Win XP that's making that box always open in LIST view. I would
like to know where to change that setting.

If I can't find the answer, that utility you suggested looks pretty nifty. I
appreciate the referral Terry, but it seems to me, this is something that
should be readily available within Windows.

Thanks,
Robert

And like I said, many programs do extend the file open dialog, but many
don't (like MS apps). I've researched it quite a bit, and I haven't
found anything to change it other than a utility.

Report back if you find something,

You will have to change settings as follows :
Open any folder.
By right clicking and/or using view button, arrange fils and folders
in way you like
Go to Tools -----> Folder Options
Go to View Tab
Click on Apply to All folders
You will get the list sorted out in way you want in *any* (includes
file -> save as) explorer window you open from now on.

'OpenWide' by 'Luke Hudson' (Freeware)
<http://lingo.atspace.com/openwide.html>
For me, it works with many but not all Open/Save Dialogs.
I use this under WinXP. (It does not work under Win98SE)

'MultiEnhancer' by 'ElmüSoft' (Freeware)
<http://www.netcult.ch/elmue/ElmueSoft-en.htm>
(ca 20% down the page)
Patches many versions of Windows and WinNT(including WinXP).
I use this under Win98SE.

'File-Ex' by 'Cottonwood Software' (Payware,20 USD,30-day Trial)
<http://www.cottonwoodsw.com/fx3summ.html>
I haven't tried this one yet.

I tried that before and it worked for Win Explorer, however, it did not work
for the File SaveAs or File Open dialog box. Nonetheless, maybe I left out a
step, so I'll try it again when I get home later today.

I appreciate the suggestion,

I tried that again last night and it only works for Windows Explorer. The
File SaveAs option still comes up every time as LIST.

Yes, Explorer controls all file dialogs, and it never made sense why
they aren't individually configurable, especially the File Open/Save As.
I knew the other suggestion would work for Explorer views, but not for
the dialog boxes. A utility is the only workaround I've ever heard of.

Besides the link I sent you, you might find something useful here:
