Pedro,

Where did you get the REG file from, and what is it about?

To apply the .REG file contents to the Windows registry, right-click the ..REG file and choose "Merge".

Warning: Serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly by using Registry Editor or by using another method. These problems might require that you reinstall your operating system. Modify the registry at your own risk.

Did you create it by yourself? If yes, then reason could be that you had not
saved the file with proper file type. If the file name is appearing something
like "disablerun.reg" with a Notepad icon then open the file again in
Notepad. Click File menu and click Save As. Type a new name e.g.
disablerun.reg for the same file and from the "Save as type" drop down menu
choose "All Files" and click Save button.

You can also try this:
As said by Ramesh, right-click on you Registry file and if there is no Merge
option then it is sure that the file has not a proper association. Actually,
this is a notepad file with .reg as the first name. You can still use this
file by renaming it.

Click Tools - Folder Options - click View tab and uncheck "Hide extension
for known File type". Rename the file e.g. disablerun.reg and press enter.
See a change in icon shape. Later, make a check mark again on the same Hide
Extension option.

Hope this help, let us know!

Someone/something modified the default action for handling .reg files. To
determine what the default action is, right-click on a .reg file and see
what option is displayed in BOLD.

That is the option that is used when you double-click on a .reg file.

and they did you a favor by doing so - I would not change it back if I
were you! It is a common tweak to redefine a .REG file's default action
to EDIT rather then MERGE. It's a safety thing, you don't want a careless
double-click to go changing the reg, or some badware downloading a reg
file and "opening" it in the background. This way it only opens in
notepad.

this tweak is also often done to the other "dangerous" file types:

BAT, CMD, VBS, WSF, JS, and a few others I can't remember.

Do you have your computer set to hide file extensions? (Folder Options - view).
The file may actually be a text file (example: file.reg.txt) and not a registry file and the final
".txt" is not showing.
