Adding Reg file

How come lately when I click on a .reg file it opens in Notepad.
How do I get it back to prompting me "Yes" or "No" to importing it into the
Registry?
Thanx for any help.

In My Computer, Tools, Folder options, File types, reg, Advanced, set merge
as the default action.

After setting the default acton as merge, what is the "application used to
perform action"?.

The reason the REG file opened in Notepad is because you (or some really
nice utility) set Edit as the default, which is a GOOD idea! Keeps you from
accidentally merging a REG file you don't want to merge. It's a simple
matter to right-click and choose Merge. That's what I do.

Thanks, but I already figured that out.
But now I have an even more complex problem with regedit.exe.
I have read several posts and they keep telling me to start reg.exe.
Well in my case, it's not that simple. Because of a mishap in freezing the
computer from the USB case, the .exe association was deleted. Since I have
already downloaded the xp_exe_fix.reg file, i tried to merge it.
I know, just input this command in the Run option in the Start Menu. "REG
add HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System /v
DisableRegistryTools /t REG_DWORD /d 0 " But, as you already know, the .exe
associations have been corrupted , and I can't access the Task Manager. =(
Please help me figure out this complicated problem.

Best Regards,
BarrY

Windows seems to not recognize the extension ".com"
What should I do?
Thanks Gary for the website, it explains a whole lot more

You don't have extensions hidden do you? The file originally was
regedit.exe? You can't run it after changing the name to regedit.com?

So you cannot run command.com either? I usually start command.com and
start exe-files from here, when i see this problem

nothing works for me, I've tried all the possibilities, and none of them seem
to work, because of the .exe problem in the first place.

1. In Explorer, go to Tools, Folder Options, View tab, and uncheck the item
that says to Hide Extensions for Known Filetypes, then click OK.

2. Find C:\WINDOWS\REGEDIT.EXE. Right-click it and Rename. Replace EXE with
COM.

3. Go to Start>Run, type in REGEDIT, then press Enter.

What happens?

and I've downloaded the ".com reg fix".
and I still can't access the regedit.exe =[

What do you mean you can't access regedit.exe. There shouldn't BE any
regedit.exe at this point. Or can't you find REGEDIT.EXE in the first place?
Use Search and search for REGEDIT (no extension.) What comes up?
