File recovery

Has anyone in this group ever successfully recovered a
file after it has been "cut and pasted" to another
device? The file was inadvertently "cut" (instead of
being "copied") from the original laptop to a PCMCIA
backup device, cut and pasted to the new laptop, and then
the new laptop needed a make-over (wrong OS installed) and
was formatted. Now the original files are gone. I have
tried to locate the files using Recover It All, but I
don't see the files.

I am hoping that someone in this group has some
(successful) experience with forensic recovery software.

Any suggestions?

The more you use the machine that the file was cut from, the lesser the
likelihood of being able to recover the file. There are 3rd party apps
to do this. The one I use is Undelete from Executive Software:
